The capital of Santorini, doubtlessly one of the most beautiful villages in Greece - along with Oia. Fira is built in a very impressive location above the cliffs on the edge of the caldera, at a height of 260 meters. Seaport of the country is the bay of Fira, from where one goes in the Country taking the cable car, donkey or on foot for the more adventurous! The houses are whitewashed, with domes, arches, many windows on the side facing the sea, peek through the narrow streets. On top neighborhoods, on the edge of the cliffs, terraces, balconies made of surrounding homes. Oia

Oia is the first village to be confronted by the board as you enter the caldera and raised his eyes open. The sight of the spread in Oia cliff above the cove Armenia and picturesque harbor of Amoudi welcomes the traveler and puts climate of Santorini. The colors of the rocks appear to have roll over and be uphill from the dark bottom of the white surfaces of buildings, having traveled thousands of years a course that has been imprinted in the rock with a variety of shapes and colors.

The current name Oia just took the 30s by the Venetian conquerors, after the earlier name of the settlement was Pano Meria or Castle of Saint Nicholas. Then throughout the so-called Santorini built castles - small stone closes with openings-plots at the highest point of the wall, in which was enclosed the bulk of the village to protect it from pirates. To avoid residents unannounced landings built watchtowers - Watchtowers or sip from the Turkish Koules means tower - the highest point of the fort from where viglatores (objects) could see the sea and to notify in case of emergency gunfire day or fires during the night.

The cobbled going for the settlement and the capital Fira Fira is framed by stone walls and, just beyond, donkeys grazing in farmland blonde.

The settlement was established in the 16th century and the name was given by the then pirates - conquerors (Imerovigli observatory during the day). When the leader of the Venetian Marco Sanudo conquered Santorini in 1207, raised the flag on the castle Skarou probably at that time the island was officially renamed from Thira to Santa Irini - Santorini.

The castle of Skarou guarding the western entrance of the island not conquered even once during the 600 years of life. The castle overlooks the rock Skarou has a long history and well worth a visit, of course on foot, following the path that connects the Rock to Fira (about 20 minutes walk).
