DIVINE LITURGIES & TRADITIONAL FEASTS (“PANIGIRIA”)

 

Many cultural and religious events and festivals,too take place in Santorini during summer. The most popular are the following:

 

July 15: Saint Kirikos - Oia

July 22: Church of Saint Markella - Akrotiri

August 1: Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross (Ipsosi Timiou Stavrou)- Oia

August 4: Church of the Holy Seven Youth of Ephesus (Agii Epta Paides) - Oia

August 6: Church of Transfiguration of the Savior (Metamorfosis Sotiros) - Oia & Mesa Gonia

August 15: The Assumption of the Virgin (Koimisis Theotokou)- Villages of Finikia, Oia Mesa Gonia

September 14: the Elevation of the Holy Cross (Ipsosi Timiou Stavrou)- Oia

September 24: Virgin Mary of the Myrtle Tree (Panagia Myrtidiotissa) - Kamari etc.

 

FESTIVALS

 

•    The Santorini Jazz Festival, which takes place every July.

 

•    The “Ifestia celebration", a festival of cultural events, concerts, dance performances and a virtual volcanic eruption with fireworks taking place in August.

 

•    The International Music Festival in early September. Famous artists from all over the world play at “Petros M. Nomikos Conference Center” at Fira.

 

•    The feast of the Diocese in Mesa Gonia on August 15, where traditional fava is served.

 

•    Easter:

do not miss the Easter celebrations at Pyrgos; all the hill of Kastelli at Pyrgos is lit by torches on Good Friday and during the Epitaph. On Easter Sunday, at the Pyrgos square an effigy is burned and fireworks fall and while lamb is impaled above fire and wine is offered.
